This course will first give you an overview of how your back works. You will learn about back injury and the causes of back pains. You will then study important legislation which covers Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work Act, the Manual Handling of Loads, as well as the Protection of Pregnant, Post-Natal, and Breastfeeding Employees. You will also learn the importance of a good back posture and suitable clothing for manual handling.
Next, you will learn about office ergonomics and the effects of incorrect body posture. You will also learn about manual handling ergonomics which aims to fit the task to the person rather than the person to the task. You will study the TILE model which includes Task,Individual Capability, Load, and Environment, and how it aims to help people to work within their capabilities and reduce the risk of injury. The course will also teach you the principles of safe lifting.
This course was developed by the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies, and is intended as a refresher training course for those who have previously completed a one day Manual Handling course.
